Date(s) - 08/18/2016

Soon after arriving in the U.S., refugees begin navigating unfamiliar systems, such as public transportation and American health care infrastructures. When seeking support for mental health concerns, clients may be deterred from accessing and receiving services by an unfamiliar health care framework. Thinking beyond the Western concepts of health, such as compartmentalizing mental health symptoms, can help direct service and medical providers integrate mental health care approaches for refugees. Understanding and implementing alternative mental health care services for refugees was a consistent gap identified in our needs assessment. From incorporating mental health screenings into refugee medical assessments to offering multi-cultural art therapy groups, providing effective mental health interventions requires innovative ideas to meet the unique needs of refugee communities. With a culturally competent perspective of refugee mental health, resettlement agencies, service providers, and clients can lead the development of a thriving refugee resettlement experience.
